Lotto NL Jumbo have compiled a strong team going into this year’s Tour de France, which is especially important to the team with the Grand Depart being in the Netherlands. One rider with high hopes for the Tour is young gun Wilco Kelderman, who is often seen riding up the front with the best. Despite his young age his palmares already boasts impressive results such as 4th overall at the 2014 Dauphine and 7th overall at the Giro D’Itlia. He is also no stranger to winning the young rider classification in stage races such as Tour de Romandie and the Tour of California and that’s only naming a few. We caught up with him at the team’s early season training camp to find out a bit more about this impressive rider.
Name: Wilco Kelderman
Type of Rider: I am a General Classification rider and this is my 4th year as a professional rider.
Do you follow any other sports? I only really follow speed skating and cyclo-cross in the winter. One of my training partners is Lars Van der Haar and he is one of the best cyclo-cross riders in the world.
Aims for 2015: I want to have a good season and aim in every race top 10. I especially want to do well in Tour de France. I am excited about the tour starting only 25km from my home. I am looking forward to the Dutch spectators, hopefully it will be the same as Yorkshire was last year. I was there for the Dutch Tv and it was unbelievable.
Hopefully the season I will be able to do the bigger races and show myself. I don’t find it daunting more exciting. I have shown already what I can do a little bit last year but this year I want to show even more.
Favourite Race: I like to race in France. The Dauphine & Paris Nice, shorter stage races with shorter stages where it is a lot about tactics.
Favourite place to train: I like to train Spain for the good weather. Tenerife is really nice but really hard. Last summer I was in America in Utah training and that was also really nice. Also we were racing in California, I would like to go back there and train hopefully in the future.
Guilty pleasure: Chocolate!
Favourite OTE Product: I like the energy drinks and energy gels, I am very happy with the taste and it is easy to get down. The chocolate recovery drink too is good after training.
What is your favourite pre race breakfast: I have oatmeal, with some bread and usually an omelette too (prepared by team chef Jesper Boom, read more about his job here)
We wish Wilco and the rest of the team lots of luck for this year’s Tour de France, we will be supporting them all the way to Paris!
